Akwa Ibom State on The Verge of Major Technology Revolution

Lagos may have the most visible physical infrastructure and Cross River may be the tourist destination of choice but if the ongoing talks in Akwa Ibom State progress, Akwa Ibom State may be the technology state to watch in 2010. Ongoing talks between 3i Mobile (http://www.3iprojects.com) and the Akwa Ibom State government will lead to Akwa Ibom being the first state in Nigeria where citizens can make free unlimited cellular telephone calls.
3iMobile is negotiating to deploy the first 4Gcapable cellular network that will be available free in two stages. In Stage one due in mid 2010, all State civil servants will be able to make free calls between themselves in the State and extremely inexpensive calls with Nigeria to other networks. Due to network architecture and interconnect tariff rates, international calls will be as low as two naira per minute to most European, Asian and North American countries and slightly higher to other regions. In the second phase due early 2011, 3i Mobile will roll out its 4G network across the state with a basket of free minutes to the citizens with extra minutes at a small premium. Asked why 3i Mobile is not making its network 100% free, the company said that this would prevent abuse of its network.
3iMobile has already demonstrated a live system to the Nigerian army for use in times of conflict, enabling it to shut down existing networks and operate a secure network. The system is in use by the London Metropolitan police and was recently used during the last London terrorist bombing. The system has also been demonstrated at the University of Lagos to enable students call each other without incurring cellular charges.

InsuranceTechExpo® 2009 Press Briefing Address
Published by Private Media Mart Limited on Tagged UncategorizedAddress By The CEO Private Media Mart Limited, Mr. Ejiofor Agada, During The Media Briefing To Announce The 2nd Edition Of The InsuranceTechnology Expo (InTech) 2009, At HS Continental, Allen Avenue, Ikeja.
Ladies and Gentlemen of the media, I want to use this medium and opportunity to welcome you all to this media interactive session, put up by the organizers of this year’s Annual Insurance Technology event, better known as InTech®. It is with immense pride and gratitude that I once again, meet with the most important stakeholders in this our humble quest to change the face of the Insurance sector in Nigeria for good – the media.
As a form of introduction, it is in line with the commitment of our company to offering value to the Nigerian economy by means of creating avenues for the propagation of ICT solutions as it affects different sectors of the nation’s economy in the country, that the management of Private Media Mart Limited (owners of PMM Ventures, TechBrandReview® and NewswireNigeria® (www.newswirenigeria.net), a media and publicity/events management firm of repute in the country, is organising this target market-specific sensitisation forum to examine, advocate and streamline the deployment of the tools of Information Communication Technology within the Insurance sector.
This event, which comes through the auspices of our Industry-specific Events Design and Management department, is meant to examine and review the current standards and encourage the adoption of technology tools in the insurance industry locally with global best practices as reference point.
Across the globe, the insurance industry has undergone considerable consolidation over the past decade. They are also using IT in retooling core processes and systems to increase efficiency and flexibility, reduce costs and better manage risks.
Our idea is to showcase the technologies suitable for the insurance sector and have the proponents explain the inherent advantages and features of their solutions to their target market, as well as using the avenue to discuss and ascertain the future direction of the sector; ICT-wise. It is also meant to be the only credible bridging channel between players in the Insurance sector and technology service providers to review and learn all about insurance ICT solutions in today’s technology space.
Why InTech®
Among all the activities in the insurance sector today, one factor that has the potentials to bring sweeping changes in the industry in the manner it will work henceforth is information technology. It is perhaps the most significant development in the insurance sector today. Companies will need to redefine the way business was conducted so far. For, traditional methods will have to be done away with and assimilation of newer technologies will pave the way for improved efficiency and reduce costs. More transparency in operations and flexibility to change according to innovations in technology will be the key factors for success in this industry.
It is in the realization of these facts that InTech® is forming the bedrock upon which the modern insurance sector in Nigeria will flourish. Our role in this equation is strictly that of technology-match-makers. Private Media Mart Limited is not a technology firm, neither are we insurers. But our zeal to see the rapid adoption of technology in all facets of Nigeria’s economy is the driving force behind our efforts with InTech®. Having started out last year on a rather high note, we have re-enforced our determination to ensure that the objectives of InTech® becomes realizable.
Although it is evident that the Insurance and related sector stakeholders are gradually coming to terms with the reality that technology holds the key to their success, InTech® is designed to help leverage and instill that realization. I will like to point out here that the role of the media in this seeming paradigm shift within the sector is very crucial. Needless to remind some of my colleagues on the individual and collective roles they played to make the Banking sector to become technology-savvy today. It is that same effort that we are counting on to preach the gospel of technology usage, understanding, deployment and awareness to the insurance sector.
The Nigerian insurance sector, post consolidation, is currently being ranked as the second most profitable sector after telecommunication, and the most consistent sector in the Capital Market. Ironically this feat, which should also go together with operational innovativeness and modern resources, is lacking in both. Although we have witnessed concerted efforts from few players in the insurance sector to achieve technology-driven status within the past year, it is still worrisome that technology matters are still relegated to the background in this sector with majority of the players paying lip service to technology issues.
Activities For InTech® ‘09
This year’s edition is a two-day (2) day event with the theme: “E-Insurance: issues and expectations in a growing economy” scheduled to take place between the 26th to 27th of November 2009, at the Golden Gate Paradise Hotel, Ikoyi – Lagos. The first day and part of the second day, will be used for the conference session, panel discussion of industry issues, and a mini-exhibition, while an Appreciation Gala night for CEOs and Special Guests of Honour will be staged on the second day.
Apart from the expected marketing presentations from sponsoring companies, there will also be presentations, lectures and private business meetings on industry ICT insights by some respected resource persons from around the world including experts from the Nigerian Insurance sector as well as IT solution providers.
The event will also mark the first time in the history of this country that an insurer will be presented with a Technology Advancement and Recognition award. This recognition, which is quite different from the plethora of marketing awards around, is directly based on a research carried out by Private Media Mart’s research department, to ascertain the level of technology adoption in the sector. We want to use this recognition exercise to encourage the management of technology-driven insurance companies (and even Brokers), to continue to improve on the usage of tools of ICT to further propel their companies to higher heights.
For this edition, we are expecting the top-hierarchy in the Insurance sector (CEOs, CIOs and IT Heads), representatives from the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN), National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions, major players in Enterprise Technology solutions, senior media personalities and other stakeholders in both the IT and Insurance sectors.
Projections for the Future:
It is very necessary to inform you all that the concept of InTech® is one that will stand the test of time. Subsequently, we will be announcing the various aspects through which this project will be directly influencing the ICT and Insurance sectors. From our marketing research activities, which is meant to constantly review the rate of ICT deployment and awareness in the Insurance sector, to a concerted effort to constantly projecting the availability of technologies commonly used in the sector.
Our hope is that we can always rely on you, as stakeholders in both sectors, to support this laudable cause as we believe that a more rapid adoption of technology in the insurance sector, will not only increase the viability of the sector, but also project it as a 21st century insurance sector in the eyes of the world. As we fast approach the date for this epoch-making event, I’ll once again express my gratitude to each and every one of you for the support we are sure to get in the hosting of this event. Thank you.

Emperion West Africa, Direct-On-PC, others for Cyber Café Survival Expo
Published by Private Media Mart Limited on Tagged UncategorizedGlobal leaders in the broadband services arena, Emperion is one of the confirmed participants in this year’s Cyber café Survival expo scheduled for the 10th of August 2009 at the ultra modern K&G Events Centre Oregun Lagos. The firm, which is ably represented in Nigeria by its West African office, will be hoping to use the event to introduce its current franchising scheme in Nigeria as well as special Cyber Café solutions like never seen before.
On their own part, multiple award winning Internet broadband solution providers, Direct-On-PC, will also be using the avenue of the Cyber Café Expo to promote the adoption of its latest range of WiMAX solutions. The product has also been described as the best solution for the latest trend in mini-cyber cafés for rural areas, with its ease of deployment of flexible payment plans.
According to the spokesman for the organizers of the event Private Media Mart Limited, Mr. Ejiofor Agada, the need to increase the survival rate of cyber cafés as well as tackle the challenges of SMEs in areas of Internet broadband access, necessitated the introduction of this programme which is now in its second edition. His words: “the desire to host this event is not borne out the quest to make money like some event organizers do, but to help in our own little way, to correct the impression that investment in cyber café business is a waste”.
He went ahead to also mention other participants in the expo to include IpNX, McQuintus, and Swift Networks. The event comes up on the 10th of August 2009 in Lagos, with the Nigerian Internet Group and NCC as institutional partners.
Private Media Mart To Host Second Cyber Café Survival Expo
Published by Private Media Mart Limited on Tagged UncategorizedIn a continuation of its mandate to improve the lot of the cyber cafés currently existing in the country, all plans have been concluded to host yet another edition of the Cyber Café Survival Event and Mini-exhibition in Lagos come the 10th of August 2009. Private Media Mart Limited, a leading business-to-business ICT consultancy firm, is organizing the event, which is in its second edition, with official institutional backing from the Nigerian Internet Group (NIG) and the NCC.
As a one-day affair, the Cyber Café Survival Event Series aims at finding realistic solutions that will lead to reducing the high mortality rate amongst cyber cafes across the country so as to accelerate the pace of universal access to information and communication technology (ICT) in Nigeria. The annual workshop is an idea to keep providing cyber operators and prospective investors as well as other SMEs with information on ways to sustain their businesses and also to afford related technologies and solution providers a veritable opportunity of interfacing directly with cyber café operators and prospective investors. This year’s edition with the main theme: “Scarcity Versus Cost – Tackling the Broadband Challenges”, will be held in Lagos at the K&G Events Centre, in Oregun – Ikeja Lagos.
Speaking recently, the Managing Partner and Chief Executive Officer of the firm, Mr. Ejiofor Agada disclosed that what led to the conceptualization of the workshop is a bid to find out the problems faced by cyber café operators and the reasons behind the high mortality rate of cyber cafes in Nigeria. “To help in identifying their challenges, we strive to inform them on what they are doing wrong, how to do it right and the best way to run a cyber café business. The event creates an avenue where cyber café operators and potential investors following the progress of the workshop would have a perfect plan on how to start and sustain cyber café business in Nigeria”.
Mr. Agada explained that the Internet is still one of the fastest and cost-effective means of interpersonal and corporate communications in the world and the ability to successfully sustain a cyber café business today has its own problems. He identified the issues of hardware, software, networking, security, bandwidth, power supply and the law as the major problems faced by cyber operators today. He also noted the issue of fraudulent practices by some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the provision of bandwidth capacities to cyber operators as another challenge. It is to this end that this edition of the event will be showcasing select Internet Broadband service providers in the country with repute and verifiable, honest business practices.
Furthermore, he explained that broadband is expensive for Nigerians due to the undeveloped infrastructures we have when compared with other countries of the world. He therefore urged the government to make the market better through the provision of broadband services; situate a well regulated body to handle complaints from the cyber operators and investors and pay more focus on the providers of bandwidths. “The government should make the market better. The business of providing broadband services in Nigeria is not well indicated at all. Government gives so much attention to telecommunications, the end users of bandwidth utilization more than the providers of bandwidth. The regulation is not there, if it is there, it is not well stated”.
The first edition of the workshop focused on hardware and software challenges of cyber café business in Nigeria with participation from Omatek, Beta Computers, Wazobia Linux, Amsco, Jidaw, and Microsoft. In this edition, good players in broadband services as well as government agencies would be there to promote bandwidth accessibility in Nigeria and talk to potential investors and of cyber café operators in the country on what is currently available in the market to make their business profitable.
