Lack of Lightning protection Systems Linked to Building Collapses

The incessant cases of building collapses recorded over time in the country have been attributed mainly to the effects of lightning strikes rather than structural defects. Making this known recently is an expert in lightning and surge protection systems and the managing director of ATNIG Lightning Protection Technologies limited Mr. Babalola Olusanya during the company’s parley with the media in Lagos.

According to him, lightning is one of the most spectacular natural phenomena, but no less horrendous are its consequences, especially when it strikes tall buildings). Mr. Olusanya explained that lightning stroke is accompanied by a number of effects that can prove ruinous for the building structure and consequently lightning protection is needed. His words: “In a world where buildings and equipment become more complex, lightning is a permanent danger. A strike can damage buildings and produce failures in the electronic equipment and besides it can cause fire and serious economic losses”.

Making direct references to various occasions where the authorities’ investigations on collapsed structures had been inconclusive, the ATNIG boss explained that due to ignorance in certain quarters, lightening is seldom identified as the culprit, even though the natural phenomena has the most destructive capabilities. Apart from being one of the major causes of building collapse, the expert pointed out that lightening discharges represent great hazard to even people, animals and electronic equipment with consequences including fire, stop production or the interruption of critical processes.

Describing ATNIG as a complete indigenous company created in 2005 to focus exclusively on meeting the lightning protection needs of both corporate and individual bodies, Mr. Olusanya said that deploying the latest technological solutions to combat the threat of lightning from his company will go a long way in avoiding losses causes by lightning. These include solutions for external lightning protection, overvoltage/surge protection, Earthing systems, preventive solutions and exothermic welding.

Echoing his explanations, the Chief Executive Officer of ATNIG Engr. Christopher Ilo added that lightening and surge protection in the 21st century is now very technical and no longer left to chance. Explaining the advantages of its range of solutions from their technical partners and global leaders in lightening and surge protection systems, Aplicaciones Tecnológicas S.A of Spain, Engr. Ilo said that, “At ATNIG, we try to match each lightning and surge challenge with products and solutions that are tailored to suit each client’s budget, because with our depth of knowledge the efficacy of our products and services, the dedication of our team is unmatched in the industry”, he said.
