Global leaders in Wireless solutions provision Aviat Networks, Inc. has announced Monday the appointment of Chairman Chuck Kissner to the additional role of chief executive officer of the company. Kissner succeeds Harald Braun, who has resigned as President and Chief Executive Officer. The California-based Aviat Networks, which was renamed from Harris Stratex Networks, Inc. on January 28, said that the Board has also appointed Dr. James Stoffel as lead independent director of the company.
Kissner, a 40-year technology industry veteran, has previously served as Chief Executive Officer of Stratex Networks from July 1995 through May 2000 and again from October 2001 to May 2006. He was elected a Director of Stratex Networks in July 1995, and Chairman in August 1996, a position which he held through January 2007.
Earlier, Kissner served as Vice President and General Manager of M/A-COM, Inc. from July 1993 to July 1995, as President and CEO of Aristacom International, and Executive Vice President and a Director of Fujitsu Network Switching, Inc. He also held a number of executive positions at AT&T. now Alcatel-Lucent.
In a statement, Kissner said, "The Board and I sincerely thank Harald Braun for his contributions and leadership over the last two-plus years. Harald was a strong force in guiding the company through its post-merger transition, expanding its customer focus and leading its emergence under the new identity of Aviat Networks."
In a related development, the management of the Nigerian office of Aviat Networks also recorded some changes in its leadership, with the confirmation of Mr. Olawale Osimosu as the substantive Sales Director and Country Head. Making this clarification during a recent visit to Nigeria, the Vice President African Region for Aviat Networks, Mr. Trevor Burchell explained that the move was a ‘strategic one meant to fortify the management of the Nigerian office’.
According to him, “Change in management is something that always happens in any company and obviously if you looked at Nigeria specifically, our previous management probably did a lot for the company. What we have tried to do is to make sure we grow our people internally and allow them to take over from our expatriates and drive the company forward. Even though the leadership of the previous management brought us to where we are today in Nigeria, we still feel its time for our own people, in our local office to take over and run the business. Mr. Olawale Osimosu is the new helmsman for the Nigerian office now. We believe in our people and the change is meant to empower them and show our commitment to having Nigerians running our offices in Nigeria”, he concluded.
From his previous responsibility as the company’s Account Director, Mr. Osimosu will bring in his wealth of experience to bear in his new responsibilities in sales and operations for Aviat Networks in Nigeria. With over 25 years experience in the telecommunications industry, the new Sales Director was appointed to consolidate the enviable hold of the microwave leaders in Nigeria.
While commenting on his immediate action plan for the company in Nigeria, Mr. Osimosu explained that though the market is competitive, Aviat Networks obviously has an edge over alternatives in more ways than one. His words: “we hope to build on our value proposition in this market which is enhanced by our over-whelming local experience and presence with several certified sub contractors, to truly be seen as the service providers of choice for the communication industry in general and the telecom sector in particular”. Mr. Osimosu has since resumed duties in his new capacity.

To further buttress the value of the Nigerian market, Mr. Trevor Burchell, Vice President – Africa Region for Aviat Networks, paid a visit to Nigeria recently. In a parley, he explained the significance of the company’s new brand identity, latest product offerings amongst other issues. Excerpts

Q: What is the overall significance of your visit to Nigeria?
A: If you go back to the time before the GSM operations started in Nigeria, we had already started investing in this country with our solutions to most of the existing CDMA operators then. So it’s a market we’ve always believed in. We have invested heavily in the Nigerian market and obviously with the two previously existing brands that merged (Harris Corporation MCD and Stratex Networks), it was a matter of time before the merged brands will assume a new identity so that people will see it as the one company it truly is. This is mostly because some people still saw the old brand (Harris Stratex) as two separate companies in the market. But the new brand brings with it corporate unity for the company.
One of the values or benefits of my visit to Nigeria is that it enables me to spend some quality time with our customers. I’ve had meetings with most of them since I came especially MTN, Bharti Airtel, and numerous other customers, which maintain long relationships with us not just in Nigeria but across Africa. So it is always a normal thing to meet with our customers when I visit and engage them to understand their directions and current market dynamics.

Q: What then is the value the recent brand identity change of Aviat Networks, going to have for Nigeria?
A: The new brand brings together the previously existing companies, because some customers used to see us as either Harris or Stratex networks. But we were also seen more as a company providing transmission services and transmission products. With Aviat as it exists however, we have introduced some new solutions and products under the Aviat brand. These include our Site Controller solution that helps control power and energy management for telecom sites as well as our current efforts in the WIMAX space by our acquisition of Telsima earlier. So we now have a lot of offerings from Aviat which will help establish the new brand. With the new identity, we have overcome our past identity problem, which is that we don’t just want to be known as a transmission service provider alone. I think the new brand gives us an opportunity to reposition the company for people to see us in a number of competencies than we were not previously known for.
One cardinal advantage Nigeria will have with the new brand is that instead of having a company previously known for transmission and microwave solutions, you now have an integrated telecom solutions management company with various areas of competence. The new identity will now enable us to enter markets where we were not that well known before, and the previous identity will no longer be a stumbling block for us. So in areas like management services and WIMAX, Aviat hopes to capitalize on its new identity to explore and take control of such areas as we have done in other places.

Q: What is the general value of the Nigerian market within the Aviat Networks portfolio?
A: As I will always maintain, Nigeria is a very strategic market for us right now. It is actually the fastest growing telecommunications market in the world today, and it has been for a number of years now. Even the economic slow-downs and the banking crises recorded in Nigeria and globally last year, didn’t affect the telecoms market in Nigeria much. We believe in the Nigerian market and we are confident that it will still remain our number one market in the African region for the Aviat brand. Our message to the Nigerian market is that, the Aviat brand is still number one and we intend to remain number one as we have the people that are passionate about the business. We are also confident about Nigeria remaining our number one market in Africa.

Q: What is the significance of the recent change in management of Aviat Networks in Nigeria?
A: Change in management is something that always happens in any company and obviously if you looked at Nigeria specifically, our previous management probably did a lot for the company. They did a lot in making us to be among the very top players in the Nigerian market. What we have tried to do is to make sure we grow our people internally and allow them to take over from our expatriates and drive the company forward. Even though the leadership of the previous management brought us to where we are today in Nigeria, we still feel its time for our own people, in our local office to take over and run things. Mr. Olawale Osimosu is the new helmsman for the Nigerian office now. We believe in our people and the change is meant to empower them and show our commitment to having Nigerians running our offices in Nigeria.

Q: What is your projection for Aviat in the next five (5) years?
A: I think I still see it as retaining its position as the leader in the market, but I also see a much stronger leap for us in the area of managed professional services. I think we have a lot to offer in terms of our ability to provide cost saving solutions to the operators and the ability to provide more solutions, that will enable operators optimize their current assets or existing infrastructure.

Ceragon Networks Ltd. a leading provider of high-capacity, 4G/ LTE-Ready wireless backhaul networks, today introduced the newest member of its FibeAir RFU (Radio Frequency Unit) solutions family. The Green Mode RFU-HP makes for unique, energy-efficient 1Gb IP Trunk radio implementations.
Featuring an adjustable power mode the Green Mode RFU-HP can reduce radio link power consumption by as much as 30% compared with existing solutions. The new RFU-HP is combined with Ceragon advanced FibeAir IP-10 platforms, for a complete, feature-rich IP solution with an unmatched, low total cost of ownership.
A critical design issue for current wireless networks is the development suitable architectures that can efficiently reduce power consumption, thereby increasing the operational lifetime of the network, while cutting operational expenditure. Ceragon’s Green Mode RFU-HP offers automatic control of both the power consumption as well as the transmission power, ensuring that no excess energy is used while the network operates in “steady state”. Under fading conditions the power is automatically increased to compensate for signal loss and to ensure the link continues to meet the required performance level.
Ideal for any deployment configuration, all-indoor, split-mount and all-outdoor, Ceragon’s new radio system can provide additional and significant power savings across an entire telecommunication network, without compromising performance and availability. In addition, the New RFU-HP comes with the following unique capabilities:
• Highest available transmit power – Supporting transmit power of up to 32dBm, both in split and all indoor configurations, , the Green Mode RFU-HP offers unmatched performance, extending wireless links over longer distances with enhanced availability. This feature also allows carriers to use smaller, less costly antennas without compromising the link’s reach or performance.
• High capacity – Operating in any standard channel bandwidth up to 56 Mhz, Green Mode RFU-HP delivers up to 500Mbps on a single channel, and up to 1Gbps using cross polarization Interference Canceller (XPIC).

Additional Power and Cost Saving Benefits

• All-outdoor Trunk IP Networks – RFU-HP can be deployed in combination with Ceragon’s advanced FibeAir IP-10 solutions family in all-outdoor configurations. Allowing for zero footprint deployments, the combined solution can scale up to offer up to 5 Gbps of guaranteed traffic. Requiring no heating or cooling devices, it helps operators to achieve additional power savings.
• Support for asymmetric transmission – Unlike competing radio systems, RFU-HP can be used in asymmetric mode (higher bandwidths downstream, lower bandwidths upstream). This allows operators to design smarter network architectures with lower equipment costs and reduced power consumption across the entire network.
• Adaptive Transmit Power & Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM) – Ensuring that each microwave radio is automatically optimized to provide the best performance under changing weather conditions. Adaptive transmit power is used to lower the signal output power when environmental conditions are good in order to reduce power consumption and network interference. ACM is a technology that allows the wireless link to adjust itself to changing weather conditions in order to support several types of availability for different types of service.

“As the industry experts in radio technology, we continue to provide real benefit to our customers by helping them to make communication services accessible everywhere,” said Ira Palti, President and Chief Executive Officer of Ceragon. “By reducing the cost and power requirements of wireless long haul solutions Ceragon enables operators to profitably serve remote communities. We plan to continue and strengthen our offering and to solidify our technological leadership.”

The global microwave leader, Aviat Networks Incorporated, which announced its name change from Harris Stratex Networks a couple of months ago, has pledged to capitalize on its new brand identity to further rededicate itself to its commitment to providing advanced IP wireless network solutions and to continue to make progress in radio access networks as well as support the evolution of wireless technology in developing telecommunication markets especially in Nigeria.

According to the company’s officials in Nigeria, the new brand is said to represent a culmination of the company’s transformation from that of a specialized microwave backhaul equipment supplier into a world-class provider of advanced IP wireless network solutions, energy and security system solutions, 4G broadband access and core solutions and comprehensive TDM to IP product migration lifecycle services. Today, Aviat Networks is ideally positioned to help operators successfully evolve their existing networks toward an all-IP broadband future, expand into untapped rural and remote markets, and capitalize on the explosive growth of mobile data traffic around the globe.

Speaking during the launch of the new company, Harald Braun, president and CEO of Aviat Networks said, “The unveiling of Aviat Networks marks a significant milestone in the evolution of our company. The Aviat brand embodies our commitment to quality and innovative products, highly individualized services, operational excellence and industry leadership.”

He continued, “In markets around the world, advancements in wireless network capacity have often been constrained because carriers are grappling with operational network limitations and cost-related challenges that historically haven’t been sufficiently addressed by telecom equipment vendors. Instead of ‘handshake’ assurances that do little to mitigate the perceived risk of IP migration, operators need practical and innovative solutions that help them bridge seamlessly from the legacy network of today to the network that will fuel their success in the future.”

Broadband is increasingly regarded as an essential utility for economic growth and social and political stability. Fuelled by new business models and government incentive programs, operators are deploying and expanding into the rural and underdeveloped areas of Africa, Asia, Middle East, and the Americas. Braun explained, “But it’s not without challenges given significant differences in the local government, economy, demographics, terrain and existing network infrastructure, including limited spectrum availability. Building networks in these environments takes skill, understanding and experience, as well as working closely by the side of our customers all the way.”

From fixed networks to broadband mobility, from TDM to all Ethernet/IP, from public to private, from planning to managed services, from the core to the edge – Aviat Networks is and intends to continue to help operators create, expand and manage the best networks for their markets and their bottom lines.

The country’s leading business-to-consumer (B2C) and business-to-business (B2B) strategic publicity and events management firm, Private Media Mart Limited has announced the repackaging of its annual Cyber Café Expo as the annual Internet Business Showcase. The event, which will be coming up on the 11th of May 2010 in Lagos, was originally conceptualized as the antidote to the seeming short-life span of majority of cyber businesses in the country and had been held annually for three (3) years in Lagos before now.
With its new identity as the Internet Business Showcase, the organizers of the event represented by the Managing Partner of Private Media Mart Limited Mr. Ejiofor Agada stated that the idea behind the change was to reflect the reality of the internet environment. According to him, “this event is meant to serve as the needed boost for the nascent Internet Business environment and sundry solutions in Nigeria today”. He explained further that the Internet Business Showcase is Nigeria’s only dedicated internet business event with Seminar and Presentations aimed at bringing together Big, Medium and Small businesses, all eager to find new ways of accessing and doing legitimate internet business.
Unlike the previous vision of using the Cyber Café Expo to serve as a bridge for both the Cyber Solution providers, the Cyber Café operators and potential investors, the new Internet Business Showcase however is meant to be the key to the future of the 21st Century, and that is why the firm intends to conduct an Internet business/technology forum for the players in the internet industry including ISPs, Telecommunication companies, Cyber Café operators, E-business solution providers, and individuals with the target audience compromising everyone involved with online and digital business. With others from board level executives, down to implementation teams, Senior Executives, Owners, CEOs, General Managers, Finance Directors, Information Managers, CIOs, Technology Managers, Cyber café operators, Students and independent cyber entrepreneurs (existing and prospecting).
In appreciating the scope and vision of the event, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has also endorsed the event with the purpose of using it to encourage internet penetration, appreciation and usage among Nigerians. NCC, through its spokesman Mr. Reuben Muoka, "NCC will always support all efforts being made to encourage the penetration and adoption of the Internet culture among Nigerians, and that is why we see the Internet Business Showcase as a classic example of how to indoctrinate Nigerian SMEs and individuals on the opportunities offered by the Internet today for all their endeavors’.
According to Mr. Agada, “the partnership with NCC is a strategic one because we felt that the telecom regulator has the same vision as we have when we conceptualized the Internet Business Showcase, and we believe that the support we are receiving from them will make the event to reach its ultimate goal of encouraging the internet content culture in Nigeria”. This year’s edition is also in collaboration with Knowledge Media International, publishers of IT Edge Magazine with Tribe Media, Newswatch Magazine, and NewswireNigeria(R) as media partners.

Nigerian Information and Communication (ICT) Journalists have concluded arrangements to host the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to a dinner.
The journalists will use the occasion of the dinner to honour Ndukwe whom they consider have served Nigeria in an exemplary manner in his position as NCC Chief Executive
The ICT journalists comprise of members of the Joint Action Committee for Information Technology Development (JACITAD), ICT magazine and Newspaper publishers and Producers of ICT Independent Television Programmes.
Baring any change of plans by government Ndukwe will vacate the office of EVC of NCC in April after putting in 10 years in the saddle.
According to a joint statement signed by Prince Osuagwu, President of JACITAD and Aaron Ukodie who represents the ICT media owners, the decision to host Ndukwe was taken after a wide consultation with members of the two bodies.
The statement said the job of journalists must transcend the seemingly primary duty of reporting. It must include pointing society and its operators to examples that have served its good.
Ndukwe, the statement said, has shown that Nigeria has the men and women that can take its various sectors from their various poor levels to heights never imagined if allowed to function without undue interference.
The achievements of Ndukwe have being variously chronicled and the awards and recognitions he has received locally and internationally are numerable, the statement.
For the avoidance of doubt, Ndukwe has been voted severally as the best telecommunications regulator in Africa. His regulatory templates have been cited severally by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and adopted by other African countries.
Ndukwe took the NCC from the position of a non-profit public organisation to one which now generates bullish income to its owners, the federal government.
Hundreds of thousands of Nigerians are now directly employed by companies that have sprung up as a result of the investment that have come into the telecom sector on account of the regulatory measures that Ndukwe’s NCC has put in place. Millions are now indirectly employed thereby.
The evening event which shall also be attended by invited members of the ICT sector will hold on February 27, 2010.
